Sightseeing in Brunei

After a leisurely morning including breakfast we  decided to catch the hotel shuttle bus  to  downtown Brunei. This allowed Christine and I,time to look at the Sultan Omar  Saifuddien Mosque and the Water  Village. We took many photos and I would love to share the inside of the Mosque with you but photography inside is strictly prohibited. You will have to be satisfied with some photos of outside. Located in a lagoon beside the mosque is a replica of a 16th century mahligai barge which was used to stage religious ceremonies.  Brunei has a number of Mosques and the Sultan Omar Saifudden Mosque whilst not the newwest or biggest is rther unique with the closeness to the business district and the Water Village.

Christine and I ventured into the Water Village on foot along one of the many walkways. We were offered rides in speedboats further into the village but Christine did not much fancy it. The speed they roared off at and the colour of the water also put me off also. The village appears ramshackled and shows a contrast especially with the Mosque in the background  these houses (shanties) have satellite discs and air conditioning. Looking through the doors and windows of the odd shack showed the furnishings seemed rather lavish that belied the tatty look from outside. We returned via the shopping mall to the hotel in time to see the Bride and Groom arrive for their reception followed avidly by their videographer. I took a few snaps and then got ready to catch the shuttle bus to the airport, which was stopped by police. On his shoulder was an SLR of some sort he asked the driver to get out, he walked about the bus to examine our luggage and sent us on our way. Not sure what is was all about but certainly impressive and this bloke meant business. After a few dramas in the departure lounge...Boarding Passes were for Dubai not London Heathrow...soon fixed with a promise our luggage would follow also....
